What is Velvet Fabric and How is it Produced?

Velvet fabric, is a type of weave that exhibits its characteristic softness, luxurious feel, and ability to reflect light at different angles due to the dense pile of fibers on its surface. weave type. This structure, obtained by sewing and raising yarns on a flat substrate, gives the surface a thick and velvety texture that does not look like leather but is felt.

Traditionally woven from pure silk, velvet is now produced by weaving polyester, viscose, and sometimes cotton blends with the aim of being more durable and economical. This technical development has opened up wide usage areas, especially in the upholstery and apparel sectors.

Velvet Fabric Technical Specifications

The most prominent technical value of velvet, compared to other fabrics, is its quite high grammage. Although it varies according to the area of use, typical values are as follows:

Feature Typical Value / Range
Grammage (Weight) Generally 300 - 800 gr/m² (600+ for upholstery)
Fiber Content Polyester, Cotton, Viscose or Silk Blend
Weave Structure Double-layer weave (with single-layer cut)
Surface Feel Jute-free, soft, flexible pile structure

What are the Varieties and Usage Areas?

Different varieties emerge depending on the type of pile process applied during velvet production. For example;

  • Ribbed Velvet: It is a striped structure created by using two-colored or patterned fibers during weaving.
  • Suede Velvet (Velour): It has a cut pile structure and offers a more matte and soft texture.
  • Yarn Velvet: It has a finer, silky sheen than normal velvet.

In terms of durability Martindale test abrasion resistance measured by, is of critical importance in upholstery selection. The main reasons why it is frequently preferred, especially in hotels and living spaces, are as follows:

  • Upholstery: Provides a luxurious look in sofa sets, poufs, and headboards.
  • Apparel: Creates a decorative effect in dresses, jackets, and evening wear.
  • Decoration: Supports sound insulation in stage curtains and wall coverings.

Note: While velvet is breathable due to its natural fiber structure (cotton/silk), synthetic blends can trap heat.
