What is Knitted Fabric and How is it Produced?

In knitted (Knit) structures, interlocking loops are formed using one or more series of yarns. This method provides high elasticity to the fabric. As the formed loops are interconnected, the fabric stretches and expands easily, but carries the risk of laddering in case of excessive stretching. Unlike woven fabrics, knitted structures do not involve warp and weft yarns crossing at right angles; instead, the yarns loop.

What are the Types of Fabric Knitting?

The most common fabric knitting types and their areas of use in the textile industry are as follows:

  • Jersey (Single Knit): A basic knitted fabric type with a smooth surface, lightweight, and widely used in everyday wear.
  • Ribana: Has a striped appearance and high elasticity, frequently used in cuffs and collars.
  • Triko (Double Knit): Has a plush inner surface structure; popular in slippers, sportswear, and underwear sectors.
  • Piqué: Known for its terry and slightly textured surface structure; the standard choice for polo shirts.

What is Knitted Fabric Used For?

Knitted fabrics are ideal for comfort-oriented garments due to their low bending resistance and ability to adapt to body movements. They offer a wide range of uses, from thin, breathable models in the summer to heavy hoodies that keep you warm in winter.

What is the Difference Between Knitted Fabric and Textured Fabric?

The biggest difference between knitted fabric and textured fabric lies in the production method and direction of elasticity. In woven fabrics, weft and warp yarns cross at right angles, while in knitted fabrics, yarns are looped. Therefore, knitted fabrics allow for multi-directional stretch (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal), whereas woven fabrics remain relatively more stable.
