What are the Technical Specifications of Cotton Fabrics?
The quality of these fabrics is determined by parameters such as size content, weave type, and weight. General standard values are as follows:
- Fiber Content: %100 natural cotton or cotton-polyester/linen blends.
- Weave Types: Poplin (tight weave/plain), Satin (shiny surface), Percale.
- Moisture Capacity: Fibers absorb up to 70% of their weight in water and evaporate sweat.
| Feature | Technical Value / Range |
|---|---|
| Weight (Apparel) | 80 - 140 gr/m² |
| Weight (Bedding/Towel) | 140 - 200+ gr/m² |
| Yarn Number (Common) | Ne 30/1 - Ne 40/1 |
Do Cotton Fabrics Shrink and How to Prevent It?
Cotton fibers swell when they come into contact with water and then shrink as they dry; meaning they tend to shrink. To prevent this, a pre-shrinkage process is usually applied to the fabric in the textile industry. On the user's side, washing garments according to the methods indicated on the label, preferably at low temperatures and low spin speeds, optimizes the result.
At What Temperature Should Cotton Fabrics Be Washed?
Due to their natural fiber structure, they are sensitive to washing. Generally 40°C washing at a temperature and on a normal/soft program is recommended. Higher temperatures can cause color fading and excessive shrinkage.
Selection and Usage Areas of Cotton Bedding Fabric
Cotton fabrics are not only used for making dresses and shirts; they are also ideal for bed linen, towels, and table textiles. Especially for cotton bedding fabrics , tightly woven structures like Percale (poplin) should be preferred. The higher the weight, the more substantial the fabric will be, but it provides a smoother touch that lasts longer.
