Pigment printing is a commonly used method for printing on polyester fabrics. The coloring process is applied in a single step using either direct printing or discharge printing techniques.
Pigment dyes are a crucial class of colorants in cotton printing. They are generally insoluble in water and organic solvents and have no natural affinity for textile fibers. Therefore, they are fixed onto the fiber using resin-based adhesives known as binders. After application, they undergo a high-temperature curing process (condensation). The fastness properties of pigment dyes largely depend on the binder. The quality and proper use of the binder directly affect the durability and performance of the print.
Pigment dyes can be used on nearly all fiber types and blends. The technical difficulties encountered with other dye types are generally absent with pigments. They are preferred due to the low cost of fixation and post-treatment processes. However, on delicate fabrics, the feel (handle) of the binder may be a drawback.
